The California
Nebula is an emission nebula located in the southern Perseus.
It is so named because it appears to resemble the outline of the US
State of California. Over 2° long on the sky, the nebula is of very
low surface brightness. It lies at a distance of about 1000 light years from Eart, its fluorescence is due to excitation of xi Persei (Menkib).
